Oak Park, Illinois
April 6, 2011

Dear Scouting Family:
Please be sure to share this newsletter with your scout and post it in a convenient place.  Our
annual dinner was a great success, highlighted by our patrol leaders’ thoughtful speeches and the
patrols’ creative skits and songs.
Joining Night
This Friday, April 8, we are welcoming all new scouts interested in joining Troop 16.  We
need your help!  Word of mouth from our current scout families is our only recruitment tool.  If you
know or have any fifth graders interested in scouting, please be sure they know about our Joining
Night on April 8 at 7:30.  This is an informational meeting for prospective New Scouts and their
parents.  Boys do not have to be in Webelos to join Boy Scouts.  Even if Webelos have not yet
"crossed-over," we'd like them to come to this meeting on April 8.  If you have any questions, please
call Terry Dutton, 708-308-9312, or email him at
March Campout
Our campout to Blackwell Forest Preserve in nearby DuPage County was a great success.
The scouts cooked all of their meals over campfires, which was easy to do because of an unlimited
supply of split firewood available.  The patrols were creative in their meals and we hope to see more
fire cooking take place on other campouts.  Thanks to all of our drivers and adult volunteers: Jim
Bicak, Linda and Dennis Bonner, Chris Clardy, James Conner, Dan Dittmer, Terry Dutton, Chris
Heffernan, Lamar Johnson, Steve Matticks, Jon Mindrum, Bill Richardson, Carolyn Schiffner, and
Graham Steele.
April Campout
Our campout this month, April 15-17. is the District Camporee at The Scout Ranch in Rochelle, IL.
Signup is this Friday, April 8.  Scouts need to bring $15 (cash) for their patrol leader and they
need to know if a parent will drive.
Service Projects
Our traditional Thatcher Woods cleanup will take place Saturday, April 30.  We will meet at the
Thatcher Woods parking lot on Chicago Avenue (behind Trailside Museum) at 8:45 AM and finish by
11:00 AM.  Juice, donuts and coffee will be provided.  Participants should bring work gloves.  No
RSVP is needed; scouts and parents can meet at the forest preserve to participate.
Our other service project will be on May 14, helping with the post office food drive, from about
2:00 to 5:00 PM.  This involves moving the donated food from the south Oak Park post office to the
food pantry at First United Church.  More information on this service project will follow.

Summer Camp
We’ll be at camp Shin-Go-Beek July 9-23 this year.  If you haven’t yet signed up for
camp, please do so ASAP.  Camp fees vary based on a scout’s wreath sales.
In order to complete planning we need to know part of the trip you can volunteer for: we need
adults to drive to and/or from the camp for each of the two weeks.  Even if you have already indicated
which weeks your son will be in attendance, we need the enclosed form returned (or click here to
Family Campout June 10-12
We are excited to announce that Troop 16’s Family Campout is back!  We’re headed to
Pokagon State Park in Indiana June 10-12.  This is our only trip which your entire family is invited to
attend.  Join us for a weekend of boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, and more!  This is a great
opportunity to introduce your family to camping.  We do all the planning, provide the equipment, plan
and shop for the meals – you come for the fun.  Families assist in preparing, cooking, and cleaning
meals, as well as the camping activities, such as campfires and hiking.  We hope you can join us!  A
signup form is attached with this newsletter (or click here to download).
