Boy Scout Troop 16
Oak Park, Illinois
April 3, 2012

Dear Scouting Family:
Please be sure to share this newsletter with your scout and post it in a convenient place. Our annual dinner was a great success, highlighted by our patrol leaders’ speeches and the patrols’ creative skits and songs.

Joining Night
Next week on Friday, April 13, we are welcoming all new scouts interested in joining Troop 16. We need your help! Word of mouth from our current scout families is our only recruitment tool. If you know or have any fifth graders interested in scouting, please be sure they know about our Joining Night on April 13 at 7:30. This is an informational meeting for prospective New Scouts and their parents. Boys do not have to be in Webelos to join Boy Scouts. Even if Webelos have not yet "crossed-over," we'd like them to come to this meeting on April 13. If you have any questions, please contact Terry Dutton.

April Campout
Our campout this month, April 20-22, is the District Camporee at The Scout Ranch in Rochelle, IL. Signup is Friday, April 13. Scouts need to bring $15 (cash) for their patrol leader and they need to know if a parent will drive or attend the weekend. The Ranch is located nearby, so if you haven’t driven to a campout yet, perhaps you can help this month.

Summer Camp
We’ll be at Camp Makajawan July 15-28 this year. If you haven’t yet signed up for camp, please do so ASAP. Camp fees vary based on a scout’s wreath sales. Scouts must have a couple pairs of Boy Scout (or similar-looking) pants or shorts for summer camp. You can purchase these at the Scout Store in LaGrange or downtown Chicago (or online at www.scoutstuff.com). Also, please note all scouts must have a physical exam completed within the 12 months prior to summer camp (July 22, 2011 or newer). The BSA’s medical form must be used. A copy of the medical form with some troop information already included is attached, or you can download it from here: BSA Medical Form Troop 16.

March Campout
Our campout to Kankakee River State Park was a great success. The scouts and adults enjoyed the beautiful warm weather by exploring the area and hiking. Thanks to all of our drivers and adult volunteers: Jim Bicak, Barry Chapman, James Conner, Dan Dittmer, Terry Dutton, Peter Harlan, Chris Heffernan, Mike Hoag, Scott Mullins, Val Rodriguez, Liz Summy, and Lori Weiselberg.

Family Campout June 8-10
We are excited to announce that Troop 16’s Family Campout is back again! We’re headed to Pokagon State Park in Indiana June 8-10. This is our only trip which your entire family is invited to attend. Join us for a weekend of boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, and more! This is a great opportunity to introduce your family to camping. We do all the planning, provide the equipment, plan and shop for the meals – you come for the fun. Families assist in preparing, cooking, and cleaning meals, as well as the camping activities, such as campfires and hiking. We hope you can join us! A signup form is attached with this newsletter (or click here to download).

Service Projects
Our annual Thatcher Woods cleanup will take place Saturday, April 28. We will meet at the Thatcher Woods parking lot on Chicago Avenue (behind Trailside Museum) at 8:45 AM and finish by 11:00 AM. Juice, donuts and coffee will be provided. Participants should bring work gloves. No RSVP is needed; scouts and parents can meet at the forest preserve to participate.
Our other service project will be on May 12, helping with the post office food drive, from about 2:00 to 5:00 PM. This involves moving the donated food from the south Oak Park post office to the food pantry at First United Church. More information on this service project will follow.

Other News
Our Troop Committee meeting this month will be Tuesday, April 10, First United Church, first floor, from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. We encourage parents to attend. This is a great way to get involved with the troop at an administrative level. Please note the change in day of the week for this meeting, as well as May’s committee meeting.

Sincerely,

Jim Bicak, Scoutmaster
Don W. Lennie, Committee Chair
