Boy Scout Troop 16
Oak Park, Illinois
February 3, 2011

Dear Scouting Family:

Our second semester always seems a bit busier than the first one (if that’s possible), so please save this letter and note the calendar at the end.

Swim Party

Please note that our annual swim party is this Friday, February 4, 7:00 to 9:00 PM, at the Concordia Pool. Pool entrance is on the west side of building 10. Do not come to the church – bring your scout directly to Concordia. Pick up time is 9:00 PM. Siblings and parents are very welcome to participate as well.

January Campout

40 scouts and 16 adults braved the winter weather at Camp Shin Go Beek last weekend. The scouts were well prepared and spent the day fort-building, sledding, snow-shoeing, and cross-country skiing. Some even tried ice fishing! The day was topped off with bowling in town and pizza dinner at The Wheelhouse restaurant. Congratulations to all of our first time winter campers (adults and scouts). Special thanks to Bill Conner for organizing the weekend food and events and to all our drivers for their support: Laura Iversen, Jen Kruse, Mike Hoag, Jim Bicak, Terry Dutton, Chris Heffernan, James Conner, Scott Yen, Peter Harlan, Tom Telleen, Bob Moriarty, John Jenks, Bill Kroeschell, Rick Easty, Dan Dittmer, Kandiah Kanagandram, Bill Richardson, Mike Stewart, and Michael Downs.

February Campout

The signup deadline for the Warren Dunes campout (about 90 minutes away in Michigan) is February 18 at the troop meeting. We leave for this campout on Friday, February 25, from the church at 7:00 PM. Remember – scouts in uniform and bring your cold weather gear. If you have not yet volunteered to drive on a campout, this one is close enough to do a drop-off or a pick-up.

Wreath rebates

Payments were made last Friday to scouts who have turned in all money owed and sales list. If your scout has not received a rebate, either his sales list has not been turned in or all payments have not been made. Please contact Dick Tresselt (848-5040) ASAP with questions about this.

Family Campout June 10-12

Mark your calendars now for the troop’s annual Super Family Campout, June 10-12, 2011, at Indiana’s Pokagon State Park located just off I-69 near Angola, Indiana, less than 200 miles from Oak Park. The park offers abundant opportunities for boating, canoeing and kayaking, waterskiing, hiking, swimming, fishing, horseback riding and more. It includes Lake James and Snow Lake, natural lakes created by glaciers that melted 10,000 to 15,000 years ago.

We’ll be setting up camp on Friday, plan on arriving for lunch or dinner. We’ll cook all meals as a group and the troop will provide a variety of watercraft for your use. More information will be available at the Troop 16 dinner, but save this June 10-12 date now for summer camping fun with your family.

Summer Camp

Our summer camp dates are set for July 9-23, 2011. Scouts can attend for one week or both. It is strongly encouraged that scouts attend summer camp for at least a week. This is the best opportunity for merit badge and rank advancement requirement work. Included with this newsletter is a flyer about the cost of summer camp this year. Remember there is a cost benefit to making a summer camp deposit ($100 per week) before February 25. The troop must make a reservation with the council on February 26, so your assistance in planning is very helpful.

High Adventure Plans

If your scout is interested in being a part of either of our high adventure trips this summer, please make a $100 deposit ASAP. Information was sent separately regarding these trips to Idaho and northern Minnesota. Please contact Jim Bicak with any questions.

Troop Website

Our Troop now has a website! Newsletters, paperwork, and other useful information will be posted there. Visit and add it as a bookmark in your web browser! We also have a Troop YouTube site. If you take video or make a slide show of a troop event, we’d love to post it here:

Our Troop Committee meeting this month will be Thursday, February 10, at Don Lennie’s home, from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. We welcome all parents.

Don W. Lennie, Committee Chair
