Boy Scout Troop 16
February 1, 2012

Dear Scouting Family:
Our second semester always seems a bit busier than the first one (if that’s possible), so please save this letter and note the calendar at the end.

Swim Party
Please note that our annual swim party is this Sunday, February 5, 1:00-3:00 PM, at the OPRF High School Girls’ Pool.  Do not come to the church – bring your scout directly to OPRFHS.  Please enter through the southernmost door on Scoville Ave (closest to the parking garage).  Pick up time is 3:00 PM.  Siblings and parents are very welcome to participate as well.

February Campout
The signup deadline for the Warren Dunes campout (about 90 minutes away in Michigan) is February 17 at the troop meeting.  We leave for this campout on Friday, February 24, from the church at 7:00 PM.  Remember – scouts in uniform and bring your cold weather gear.  If you have not yet volunteered to drive on a campout, this one is close enough to do a drop-off or a pick-up.

Wreath rebates
Payments were made to scouts who have turned in all money owed and sales list.  If your scout has not received a rebate, either his sales list has not been turned in or all payments have not been made.  Please contact Dick Tresselt ASAP with questions about this.

Spring Break High Adventure
The troop is headed to the Buffalo National River in Arkansas for a week of white water canoeing.  If your older scout (current 8th grade and up) is interested, please contact Terry Dutton ASAP for more information.  The approximate cost for this outing is $300.

Family Campout June 8-10
Mark your calendars now for the troop’s annual Super Family Campout, June 8-10, 2012, at Indiana’s Pokagon State Park  located just off I-69 near Angola, Indiana, less than 200 miles from Oak Park.  The park offers abundant opportunities for boating, canoeing and kayaking, waterskiing, hiking, swimming, fishing, horseback riding and more. It includes Lake James and Snow Lake, natural lakes created by glaciers that melted 10,000 to 15,000 years ago.

We’ll be setting up camp on Friday, plan on arriving for lunch or dinner. We’ll cook all meals as a group and the troop will provide a variety of watercraft for your use.  More information will be available at the Troop 16 dinner, but save this June 8-10 date now for summer camping fun with your family.

January Campout
35 scouts and 13 adults braved the winter weather at Camp Shin Go Beek last weekend.  The scouts were well prepared and spent the day sledding and cross-country skiing.  Some even tried ice fishing!  The day was topped off with bowling in town and pizza dinner at The Wheelhouse restaurant.  Congratulations to all of our first time winter campers (adults and scouts).  Special thanks to Bill Conner for organizing the weekend food and events and to all our drivers for their support:, Jim Bicak, Chris Clardy, Terry Dutton, Stacey Evenson, Chris Heffernan, Jerry Hutchinson, James Conner, Peter Harlan, Tom Telleen, Dan Dittmer, Bill Richardson, Mike Stewart, and Michael Downs.

Summer Camp
Our summer camp dates are set for July 15-25 at Camp Makajawan.  Scouts can attend for one week or both.  It is strongly encouraged that scouts attend summer camp for at least a week.  This is the best opportunity for merit badge and rank advancement requirement work.  Included with this newsletter is a flyer for summer camp deposits.  Remember there is a cost benefit to making a summer camp deposit ($100 per week) by our Troop Dinner (March 10).  The troop must make a reservation with the council immediately following the troop dinner, so your assistance in planning is very helpful.

Summer Camp High Adventure Plans
Our troop needs to commit to a summer camp high adventure trip for our older scouts (current 8th graders and up).  If your scout has not already completed our high adventure survey, please click here to complete it ASAP  or visit our website for more information: www.troop16oakpark.com .

Our Troop Committee meeting this month will be Thursday, February 9, in the conference room at First United Church from 7:30 to 9:00 PM.   We welcome all parents.

Sincerely,

Jim Bicak, Scoutmaster
