Boy Scout Troop 16
Oak Park, Illinois
January 30, 2015

Dear Scouting Family:
Our second semester always seems a bit busier than the first one (if that’s possible), so please save
this letter and note the calendar at the end. Please share this newsletter with your scout.

Troop Ski Trip – Forms Due Tonight!
We’re headed to Cascade Mountain on Saturday, February 7. Please see the attached forms for signup
information – and turn forms in by the troop meeting tonight! The bus will LEAVE at 7AM.

Important Election Nights Coming Up
The scouts have two important election nights coming up: February 6 and February 27. On February 6,
scouts will be electing their patrol leaders for the second half of the school year. It is important that all scouts participate in this process. This is also an opportunity for a scout to join a different patrol, if they choose to.

Also, on Feb. 6 and Feb 27, we are holding Order of the Arrow elections. The Order of the Arrow is an
honor society in scouting to recognize scouts who are leaders and demonstrate best the Oath and Law. The
scouts of our troop elect their peers to this honor society. There are two rounds of Order of the Arrow elections – a preliminary election on Feb. 6 and a final election on February 27. Scouts will need a certain number of votes in the preliminary election in order to be on the final ballot.

February Campout
The signup deadline for the February 20-22 Warren Dunes, Michigan, campout is February 13 at the
troop meeting. If you have not yet volunteered to drive on a campout, this one is close enough to do a drop-off or a pick-up.

Chess Merit Badge and Merit Badge Academy
A flyer is attached for a Chess Merit Badge event on Presidents Day, February 16. Please note, this is
not a troop event, nor is the troop organizing a group to attend. This is an individual event. Scouts should
wear full uniform if they attend.

Des Plaines Valley Council’s annual Merit Badge Academy is scheduled for March 14 at Elmwood Park
High School. Please see the attached flyer for more info. This, also, is not a troop-organized event. Scouts
should wear full uniforms if they attend. Please note that Troop 16 has counselors for all Eagle-required merit badges, so scouts are encouraged to select optional merit badges if they attend Merit Badge Academy. Eaglerequired badges can be earned throughout the year working with one of our troop’s counselors.

Annual Troop Dinner – March 7
Save the date! Our 99th annual troop dinner will be held on Saturday, March 7 at 6:30 PM at Oak Park and
River Forest High School. A separate signup flyer will be emailed out soon for this event.

Family Campout June 12-14
Mark your calendar now for the troop’s annual Family Campout, June 12-14, 2015, at Pokagon State
Park in Indiana.

We’ll be setting up camp on Friday, plan on arriving for dinner. We’ll cook all meals as a group and the
troop will facilitate many fun activities, including, hiking, swimming, boating and more! More information will be available at the Troop 16 dinner, but save this June 12-14 date now for summer camping fun with your family.

Summer Camp
Yes, we’re already thinking summer camp! Our summer camp dates are set for July 5-18 at Camp
Makajawan. Scouts can attend for one week or both. It is strongly encouraged that scouts attend summer
camp for at least a week. This is the best opportunity for merit badge and rank advancement requirement
work. Included with this newsletter is a flyer for summer camp deposits. Deposits are due at the troop
dinner (March 7) in order to get the lowest camper fee. Rebates are given based on your scout’s wreath sales.

Summer High Adventure Trips
Scouts Star Rank and above may be eligible for one of two summer high adventure trips. Information
flyers are available at troop meetings from Terry Dutton or Jim Bicak.

January Campout
Our first January campout at The Ranch in Rochelle was a big success. Scouts spent the day keeping
warm and active, then were able to enjoy pizza and bowling in the evening.

Our Troop Committee meeting this month will be Tuesday, February 3, at First United Church from
7:30 to 9:00 PM. We welcome all parents to join the Troop Committee at any time.
