Boy Scout Troop 16
Oak Park, Illinois
March1, 2013

Dear Scouting Family:
Our annual dinner is coming up soon: Saturday, March 7, 6:30 PM at Oak Park and River Forest
High School. We hope you are planning to join us and have already RSVP’d. If you haven’t RSVP’d,
please turn in at tomorrow’s troop meeting or contact Dick Tresselt by tomorrow
- March 1st. Don’t forget to bring your checkbook to the dinner to pay deposits for summer camp.

March 1 Troop Meeting
Our troop meeting tomorrow night has two important topics: Order of the Arrow elections and
Youth Protection Training. Order of the Arrow elections will be at the start of the meeting (7:30 PM),
followed by Youth Protection training at 8:00 PM.
Order of the Arrow is an honor society within scouting. Each year our scouts elect their fellow
scouts who they believe live the Scout Oath and Law to become members of the Order of the Arrow.
Scouts who are elected won’t find out until summer camp.
Youth Protection Training is the BSA’s focus on training and protecting our youth from the
dangers of abuse. A separate letter was sent to you earlier this week. We invite you to join us for this
important topic. It may be an opportunity for you to begin or continue a dialogue with your scout about
this sensitive topic.

March Campout
This month the troop will be camping March 15-17 at Apple River Canyon State Park. Signup is
at the troop meeting on March 8. Scouts need to know if a parent can drive and bring $15 in cash for
the patrol leader.

New Scout Joining Night
We need your help! Word of mouth from our current scout families is our only recruitment tool.
If you know or have any fifth graders interested in scouting, please be sure they know about our
Joining Night on April 12 at 7:30. This is an informational meeting for prospective New Scouts and
their parents. Boys do not have to be Webelos to join Boy Scouts. Even if Webelos have not yet
"crossed-over," we'd like them to come to this meeting on April 12. Attached is a joining night flyer
to forward or print and give to families of prospective scouts. If you have any questions, please
contact Terry Dutton.

February Campout
Our annual trip to Warren Dunes State Park in Michigan was very successful. The snow was a
special last-minute gift for us and made the weekend very enjoyable. The scouts spent the day
sledding and exploring the dunes. The scouts were well prepared for the cold weather, too. Thanks to
our volunteers who drove and/or stayed the weekend with us.

Other News
Our Troop Committee meeting this month will be Thursday, March 5, at First United Church,
from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. We welcome all parents. This is a great way to get involved with the
operations of the troop, so we hope to see you there.
