Boy Scout Troop 16
Oak Park, Illinois
February 28, 2014

Dear Scouting Family:
Our annual dinner is coming up soon: Saturday, March 8, 6:30 PM at Oak Park and River Forest High School. We hope you will join us and have already RSVP’d. If you haven’t RSVP’d, please turn in at tonight’s troop meeting or contact Dick Tresselt. Don’t forget to bring your checkbook to the dinner to pay deposits for summer camp and other activities.

March Campout
The troop will be camping March 14-16 at BSA Adventure Camp/The Ranch, Rochelle, IL.
Signup is at the troop meeting on March 7. Scouts need to know if a parent can drive and bring $15 in
cash for the patrol leader. We’re camped fairly nearby, so please consider driving (and camping) on this trip.

New Scout Joining Night – Spread the Word!
We need your help! Word of mouth from our current scout families is our only recruitment tool.
If you know or have any fifth graders interested in scouting, please be sure they know about our
Joining Night on April 4 at 7:30. This is an informational meeting for prospective New Scouts and their
parents. Boys do not have to be Webelos to join Boy Scouts. Even if Webelos have not yet "crossedover,"
we'd like them to come to this meeting on April 4. Attached is a joining night flyer to forward or print and give to families of prospective scouts.

June Family Campout
Due to the changes in the school calendar, the troop’s annual Family Campout will be June 14-
18, 2014, at Alley Spring State Park in the Ozarks of Missouri. This is a longer and further away family
campout than previous years. We hope you can join us.

We’ll be setting up camp on Saturday, plan on arriving for dinner. We’ll cook all meals as a group and the troop will facilitate many fun activities, including river floating, hiking, swimming, kayaking and more! More information will be available at the Troop 16 dinner, but save this June 14-18 date now for summer camping fun with your family.

Summer Camp
Yes, we’re already thinking summer camp! Our summer camp dates are set for July 6-19 at
Camp Makajawan. Scouts can attend for one week or both. It is strongly encouraged that scouts
attend summer camp for at least a week. This is the best opportunity for merit badge and rank
advancement requirement work. Included with this newsletter is a flyer for summer camp deposits.
Deposits are due at the troop dinner (March 8) in order to get the lowest camper fee.

Spring Break High Adventure
The troop is headed to the Buffalo National River in Arkansas for a week of whitewater canoeing. If your older scout (current 8th grade and up) is interested, a deposit is due at the troop dinner on March 8. The cost for this outing is $325. Contact Terry Dutton for additional information.

Summer High Adventure
Scouts Star Rank and above may be eligible for a summer high adventure canoe trip to the
Boundary Waters Canoe Area of Northern Minnesota July 19-27. Information flyers are available at
troop meetings from Terry Dutton. Approximate trip cost is $450. A $100 deposit is due at the troop
dinner.

February Campout
Our trip to Indiana Dunes State Park last weekend was very successful. The ‘mild’ temperature
made the weekend very enjoyable. The scouts spent the day sledding and exploring the dunes. The
scouts were well prepared for the cold weather, too. Thanks to our volunteers who drove and/or
stayed the weekend with us.

Other News
Our Troop Committee meeting this month will be Tuesday, March 4, at First United Church,
from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. We welcome all parents. This is a great way to get involved with the
operations of the troop, so we hope to see you there.

Sincerely,
Terry Dutton, Scoutmaster
Jim Bicak, Committee Chair
