Boy Scout Troop 16
Oak Park, Illinois
March 2, 2015

Dear Scouting Family:
Our annual dinner is coming up this weekend: Saturday, March 7, 6:30 PM at Oak Park and
River Forest High School. Please bring your checkbook to the dinner to pay deposits for summer camp
and other activities. If you haven’t RSVP’d, contact Dick Tresselt  to see if there
are spaces available…TODAY.

New Scout Joining Night – Spread the Word!
We need your help! Word of mouth from our current scout families is our only recruitment tool.
If you know or have any fifth graders interested in scouting, please be sure they know about our
Joining Night on April 10 at 7:30. This is an informational meeting for prospective New Scouts and
their parents. Boys do NOT have to be a Cub Scout to join Boy Scouts. Even if Webelos have not yet
"crossed-over," we'd like them to come to this meeting on April 10. Attached is a joining night flyer
to forward or print and give to families of prospective scouts, or direct them to our website.

March Campout
The troop will be camping March 20-22 at Apple River Canyon State Park. Signup is at the
troop meeting on March 13. Scouts need to know if a parent can drive and bring $15 in cash for the
patrol leader.

June Family Campout
The troop’s annual Family Campout will be June 12-14, at Pokagon State Park in Indiana.
We’ll be setting up camp on Friday, plan on arriving for dinner. We’ll cook all meals as a group
and the troop will facilitate many fun activities, including boating, hiking, swimming, fishing and more!
More information will be available at the Troop 16 dinner, but save this June 12-14 date now for
summer camping fun with your family.

Summer Camp
Yes, we’re already thinking summer camp! Our summer camp dates are set for July 5-18 at
Camp Makajawan. Scouts can attend for one week or both. It is strongly encouraged that scouts
attend summer camp for at least a week. This is the best opportunity for merit badge and rank
advancement requirement work. Included with this newsletter is a flyer for summer camp
deposits. Deposits are due at the troop dinner (March 7) in order to get the lowest camper fee.

Summer High Adventure
Scouts Star Rank and above may be eligible for a summer high adventure canoe trip to the
Boundary Waters Canoe Area of Northern Minnesota or a backpacking trip to the Allegheny
Mountains. Information is available at troop meetings from Terry Dutton or Jim Bicak. A $100 deposit
is due at the troop dinner for these trips.

February Campout
Our trip to Warren Dunes State Park last weekend was very successful. The ‘mild’ temperature
made the weekend very enjoyable. The scouts spent the day sledding and exploring the dunes. The
scouts were well prepared for the cold weather, too. Thanks to our volunteers who drove and/or
stayed the weekend with us.

AYSO VIP Buddy Volunteer Program
AYSO is looking for middle school and high school-aged volunteers to be AYSO VIP Buddies.
The VIP Buddy program is designed to pair a youth volunteer with a soccer play with special needs,
both on and off the field. No experience necessary; compassion and a good attitude are all that are
required. Training begins in March and games begin in April. For more information, contact Holly
Barnes at This is not a Troop 16-sponsored activity, but is considered service
hours towards rank advancement.

Other News
Our Troop Committee meeting this month will be Tuesday, March 3, at First United Church,
from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. We welcome all parents. This is a great way to get involved with the
operations of the troop, so we hope to see you there.
Do you subscribe to our troop text messaging system? The troop sends out reminders and
other information through text approximately once per week. You can subscribe by sending a text to
