Boy Scout Troop 16
Oak Park, Illinois
August 30, 2012

Dear Scouting Family:
If you are a new family to the Troop, welcome! If you’ve been with us before, welcome back. This letter
contains important information about our fall activities, and our full year calendar also is attached. Please share all of this information with your scout, and save it for future reference. Newsletters will be published on a monthly basis.Be sure to check the calendar at the end of each newsletter, since there may be changes from the full-year
one included with this newsletter. A full troop roster will be sent out shortly.

Our continued growth means we need your help and support more than ever. We have over 85 boys
registered at this time. Parent support is crucial in a troop our size. We will begin this year with required parent
meetings on September 5 or September 9. (See note below)

If your son is no longer active in the troop and you wish to be dropped from the mailing list, please send an
email to troop16@gmail.com. Remember, you may have the newsletter sent to multiple addresses. Send a
message to troop16@gmail.com with a request to add another email address or with any change of address
information.

Parent Meetings
Your attendance is needed at one of our required parent meetings. The first of these will be on September 5
at First United Church, 7:30 PM. The other option is Sunday, September 9, 3:00, at Pilgrim Congregational
Church (Scoville and Lake- enter on the north side of the building and come downstairs). These meetings should
last less than an hour and are to establish our expectations for parent involvement during the year. Please bring your calendar along so you are able to sign up for ways to assist the troop and your checkbook to pay annual registration fees.

First Troop Meeting
Our first troop meeting of the year will be next Friday, September 7. At this meeting, patrols will be formed
and the boys will elect their patrol leader for the year. It is very important that scouts attend the first meeting to be a part of the election process. Remember, meetings always start at 7:30 P.M. and end at 9:00 P.M. Scouts must wear their uniforms. Parents are always welcome to attend, but are especially encouraged to come in for the last 15 minutes of the meeting to hear all of our announcements.

General Campout Information
The boys at their Patrol Leaders Council (PLC) meeting chose locations for the campouts. The year’s
calendar is attached. It is possible that some adjustments will be made as the year progresses. Be sure to check the Calendar at the top of the webpage.

Normally the cost of a campout is handled on a patrol basis; it is $15 per boy for each campout. Cooking is
done separately by each patrol with equipment provided by the troop. The troop pays for adult food costs, although they are welcome to contribute. Adults eat as their own patrol on campouts, but one adult is always invited by each patrol for each meal.

We would like at least one “patrol parent” staying with the patrol for the weekend.

At each campout boys must have a proper scout uniform (which must be worn to meetings as well) and
their scout handbook. Other very basic equipment needed:
1. Hiking shoes/boots (no gym shoes in the winter)
2. Appropriate, warm clothing, including rain gear
3. Sleeping bag

First Campout
We’ll be going to Mississippi Palisades State Park, near Savanna, Illinois, September 28-30. Of course we
will need several drivers and adults willing to stay. Boys must sign up and pay the fee to their patrol leader at the
meeting one week before the campout; boys need to know at that time if a parent will be driving. Adults are not
charged a meal fee. For this campout the deadline is our troop meeting on September 21. The fee due to the
patrol leader at that time will be $15. Boys need to bring the exact amount of cash to give to the patrol
leader. Please let your boy know for this meeting whether you are able to drive to the campout.

Troop Participation Requirements
All scouts in the troop are expected to meet the minimum participation standard: (1) attend 40% of the
meetings; (2) attend one campout in the fall and two in the spring; (3) participate in one service project; (4) participate in wreath sales.

Other Information
Our Senior Patrol Leader is Ethan W. If your boy has a question which cannot be
answered by his patrol leader, Ethan would be the next person to call.

Our website has lots of information, including a calendar of events: www.troop16oakpark.com

Our Troop Committee meets on the first Tuesday of each month. Our first meeting will be Tuesday,
